A suggested post to share on Nextdoor for Public Agencies to encourage neighbors to shovel out fire hydrants and and accessible parking spots

Poll question: Are the accessible parking spots and fire hydrants near you clear of snow?

Poll options:

  1. I will check to see
  2. Yes, parking spots and fire hydrants near me are clear of snow
  3. No, they are not, and I am unable to clear them at this time
  4. No, they are not; I will do my best to clear them
  5. Other (please leave a comment)

Poll description: For our neighbors who depend on accessible parking spaces, snowstorms cause a great deal of anxiety and stress, as those who use these spots are physically unable to shovel. If they are parked in an accessible parking space when it snows, they can't get out, and when they return to a spot after it snows, they can't get in.

You can help by adopting an accessible parking space near you and shoveling it out after it snows.

Secondly, should there be a fire, and if a fire hydrant is not shoveled when the fire department arrives, the minutes it will take to locate and shovel out the hydrant could cost lives. You can help by adopting a fire hydrant near you and digging it out each time it snows!

After a snowstorm like we just had, I know many of you are exhausted from shoveling, and your arms are sore. With this said, many hands do make for lighter work. You can post to your neighborhood's Nextdoor network and invite your neighbors to shovel out accessible parking spaces and a fire hydrant near you. To invite your neighbors to shovel out accessible parking spaces and fire hydrants with you, click on the following link https://nextdoor.com/news_feed/ and be sure to select "Your neighborhood" or "Nearby neighborhoods" and NOT "Anyone" for where your post appears to invite your immediate and nearby neighbors to join you.If you cannot physically shovel or find someone to hire to shovel, you can also follow the steps I’ve outlined in the paragraph above to ask your neighbors for help.

If you have energy left over, you can also adopt and shovel out curb cuts and storm drains and ensure sidewalks are shoveled to at least 36 inches wide so our neighbors who depend on mobility aids - such as walkers and wheelchairs - can get by.
